Acknowledgement card wording

Wording you can use as it stands, or change to suit. These are the thank you cards Irish families send after a funeral, and the examples below cover most situations.

The short answer

An acknowledgement card says who it is from, says thank you, and names what you are thanking people for: their sympathy, Mass cards, flowers, letters or help. It is short by design. Four to six lines is plenty, and the name of the person who died usually appears in the first line.

Wording examples

Swap in your own names and details. Every example fits on our acknowledgement cards, and we will tell you before printing if your wording needs trimming.

Traditional

The wording most Irish families use. It thanks people for each of the things they are likely to have done.

The family of the late Mary O'Brienwish to express their sincere thanksfor your kind expression of sympathyon their recent sad loss. The Holy Sacrifice of the Masswill be offered for your intentions.

Mass cards, flowers and letters

When you want to name what people sent.

The family of the late John Murphywould like to thank you most sincerelyfor the Mass cards, flowers, letters and messagesyou sent on the death of John, and for your presence at the funeral.Your kindness will always be remembered.

Non-religious

For a family that would rather not mention Mass or prayers.

The family of Seán Walshwould like to thank you for your kindnessand support over the past weeks.Your messages, visits and memories of Seánmeant more to us than we can say.

Short

For an A7 card, or when the card also carries a photograph and a verse.

Thank you for your kindnessand sympathy at this sad time. The Kelly family

From a husband or wife

When the card comes from one person rather than the whole family.

Pat and I were blessed with fifty-two years together.Thank you for your kind words, your visitsand your prayers since he died. They have been a great comfort to meand to our family.Bridget

From the children

When a son or daughter is writing for the family.

Mam would have been touched to seehow many of you came to say goodbye.Thank you for your sympathy, your helpand your kindness to us all.Siobhán, Declan and Aoife

Neighbours, carers and staff

A line to add when you want to thank particular people.

A special word of thanks to our neighbours,to Dr Byrne and the staff of the hospice,to Fr Ryan who celebrated the Funeral Mass, and to the funeral directorsfor their care and kindness.

With the month's mind

When the card goes out before the month's mind and the family want people to know.

The family of the late Tom Dalythank you sincerely for your sympathy and support. His Month's Mind Mass will be celebratedin St Patrick's Church, Main Street,on Sunday 5th April at 11am.

Headings

The card usually carries a short heading above the wording. The ones families choose most often are “Thank You”, “In Grateful Appreciation”, “With Sincere Thanks” and “A Heartfelt Thank You”. You can also write your own, or leave the heading out.

What do you write on a funeral acknowledgement card?

Three things: who the card is from, a thank you, and what you are thanking people for. A typical Irish example is: "The family of the late Mary O'Brien wish to express their sincere thanks for your kind expression of sympathy on their recent sad loss. The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions."

When should acknowledgement cards be sent?

There is no fixed rule. Most families send them in the weeks after the funeral, often around the month's mind. A card that arrives later is still welcome.

Do you need to handwrite anything on an acknowledgement card?

No. The printed wording is enough. Many families add a short handwritten line or a signature for close friends and relatives, which is why some choose the larger A6 card.

Who should get an acknowledgement card?

Anyone who sent a Mass card, flowers, a letter or a donation, came to the funeral, or helped the family. If you are working from a sympathy book or a list of Mass cards, that is your list.

Should the card say a Mass will be offered?

Only if one will be. The line "The Holy Sacrifice of the Mass will be offered for your intentions" is traditional and is usually included when the family is arranging a Mass for those who sympathised. Leave it out if not.

Can the acknowledgement card match the memorial card?

Yes. Any design on this site can be printed as an acknowledgement card, so it can match the memorial card, bookmark or wallet card.
